- info: 'Bryan V.' says: Thank you for contacting EarthLink LiveChat, how may I help you today?
-
- me@earthlink.net: Why does my Earthlink DSL fail almost once a month?
-
- me@earthlink.net: I am now connected by dial-up. DSL stopped working about 20 minutes ago. This is very aggravating.
-
- Bryan V.: I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. However, do you have a router connected to the DSL modem?
-
- me@earthlink.net: sometimes it stops working for just a couple of minutes and sometimes like now, for extended periods of time
-
- me@earthlink.net: no
-
- Bryan V.: What are the lights status on the DSL modem when you try to connect to the Internet?
-
- me@earthlink.net: Power, Ethernet and DSL are solid, internet light is off, just like every previous experience. I have already turned off the modem restarted the computer and turned the modem back on
-
- me@earthlink.net: are you still there?
-
- Bryan V.: Yes.
-
- Bryan V.: Please give me a moment as I need to work on this issue.
-
- Bryan V.: Please follow all these steps after which you need to disconnect from the dial up connection, then connect to the DSL connection, open up the modem page which is 192.168.1.1/gCfgPPPOE.html
-
- Bryan V.: Once the modem page is open, then login with your email address and password.
-
- me@earthlink.net: I know, the person I spoke with the last time this happened was reading from the same script. If I do not have an internet connection that will not work
-
- Bryan V.: To remove your browser's cookies: 1. First go to My Computer. 2. Double click on Control Panel. 3. Double click on Internet or Internet Options. 4. Click the Delete Files button in the Temporary Internet Files section. 5. Next, click the Delete Cookies button. If you want to see what cookies are on your machine & selectively remove them, click the Settings button & then View Files. This will show you any cookies remaining in the Temporary Internet Files folder. If you wish to only delete cookies from a certain site, locate those cookies here, right click & choose Delete. You can delete any cookie in here you wish. If you are having problems with a particular page, look for cookie names ending with the site name you are having trouble with. For example, if you are having problems accessing http://start.earthlink.net, remove any cookies named user@earthlink.net. There is one file in here you can not delete.... It is index.dat It must remain for Internet Explorer to operate properly.#PFR#/DUT/Bro/PC/IE6/DeleteCookies

- me@earthlink.net: I know, the person I spoke with the last time this happened was reading from the same script. If I do not have an internet connection that will not work
-
- Bryan V.: You need to follow these steps once you disconnect from the Dial Up connection and once the steps are completed, connect to the Internet using the DSL connection, put that address 192.168.1.1/gCfgPPPOE.html in the Address Bar of the web page and check what opens up.
-
- me@earthlink.net: I know, the person I spoke with the last time this happened was reading from the same script. If I do not have an internet connection that will not solve my issue
-
- Bryan V.: If these steps are already been done now, please follow these steps.
-
- Bryan V.: To update the DNS settings for your Windows XP dial-up connection, follow the below given steps: 1. Go to Control Panel. 2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon. 3. Right-click on the connection & click on Properties. 4. Click on the Networking tab. 5. Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". 6. Click Properties. 7. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically". 8. Manually add DNS server addresses, select "Use the following DNS server addresses". Type in 207.69.188.185 for the Preferred DNS server, and 207.69.188.186 for the Alternate DNS server. 9. Click on OK. 10. Click on OK again.
-
- Bryan V.: Not to rush you, are you still with me?
-
- me@earthlink.net: Bryan, I think you may be reading from the wrong script. This computer which is connected by dial-up is working, that is how we are communicating. My other computer which is connected to the DSL Modem which does not have the internet light on, meaning I do not have an DSL Internet connection, is the one that is not connecting to the Internet.
-
- Bryan V.: I'm not reading any scripts now. You should have mentioned earlier that you have a dedicated computer for the DSL connection. Right now, is your dial up connection's phone line used for the DSL connection too?
-
- me@earthlink.net: 192.168.1.1/gCfgPPPOE.html generates page not found, Could it possibly be 192.168.1.1/zCfgPPPOE.html which also did not solve the issue the last time I was advised to follow these instructions?
-
- Bryan V.: Right now, is your dial up connection's phone line used for the DSL connection too?
-
- me@earthlink.net: Yes. Thanks for help Bryan, while you wasted my time the Internet light just came on and guess what I now have an internet connection that works for the moment. have a great day
